Since April 2018, Berghof has been working to enhance community safety in five Yemeni cities: Aden, Al-Mukalla, Dhamar, Sana’a, and Taiz. For people to learn more about the community safety concept, and why and how it could improve citizens’ day-to-day safety, our team created a series of videos surrounding different aspects of community safety within these cities.
Community safety describes a concept in which local police and government authorities work together with members of local communities to jointly enhance the citizens’ day-to-day safety. This first video explains the concept, and why it is important for the people in Yemen. It also takes you through the three key principles in order to achieve community safety.
Community safety is a shared responsibility. In this video, you will get to know who community safety partners are and what their role is. The video also explains the idea behind establishing community safety committees for the community to enjoy safety and peace.
To put community safety concept into practice, this video highlights some concrete examples of the work we do in Yemen to contribute to addressing some community safety challenges at the local level. The video presents some of the pilot initiatives that developed and implemented by the community safety committees we have established in five Yemeni cities comprising citizens and police officers to respond to local safety needs and challenges.
It is worth mentioning that these videos have been developed with generous support from the European Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as part of the Strengthening Community Safety in Yemen Project.
